Review: The Gingerbread Queen
I've never really been one to read fairytale retellings. Funny enough, my wife has dozens of them on her bookshelves. But none of them have ever drawn me close to the shelf and reeled me in for the strike.
This one, however, was an absolute blast.
The Gingerbread Queen follows Marga (formerly Gretel of Hanzel and Gretel). She's trying to put her past mistakes behind her, but unfortunately, people in town thinks she's a witch.
She and her brother run off to the forbidden woods to escape. Her brother remembers where some treasure was hidden around the old witch's gingerbread house. Shortly after their arrival, her good-for-nothing brother, Hanzel, runs off to France with the treasure.
But something about the gingerbread house speaks to Marga ... There's magic in this place.
This one was so much fun, with magic and sweet romance and a villainous duck!
A cozy fantasy retelling of Hanzel and Gretel you won't want to miss.
