The wind carried a gentle breeze on the air currents of the high desert on that mid-summer night. It was a small relief, and a fleeting one at that. It softly caressed our faces, gritty with sweat and sand. This was the night we’d been waiting for. This was the night we’d finally leave Afghanistan. Based on the author's personal deployment experience leaving Afghanistan in 2010 during Operation Enduring Freedom.
